International Day of Indigenous Peoples – Katurãma Indigenous Village

Dia Internacional dos Povos Indígenas – Aldeia Indígena Katurãma

Established by the UN (United Nations) on August 9, 1995, the International Day of Indigenous Peoples aims to help create the conditions needed to end the attacks suffered by indigenous peoples in their territories, after more than 500 years of the social structures imposed on indigenous peoples by peoples of European origin.

One of the declaration’s main goals is to guarantee the world’s various indigenous peoples the right to self-determination, without being forced into any action against their will, as stated in Article 3: “Indigenous peoples have the right to self-determination. By virtue of that right they freely determine their political status and freely pursue their economic, social and cultural development.”

Article 1 of the Declaration, in turn, guarantees the various indigenous ethnic groups “the full enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms as recognized in the Charter of the United Nations, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and international human rights law.” In this way, the UN puts the rights of indigenous peoples on equal footing with the rights the organization guarantees to other peoples and ethnic groups around the world.

To celebrate this important day, Itaminas organized a visit to Katurãma Village, in São Joaquim de Bicas, with children from the Criança Feliz project. The visit included activities throughout the day, a presentation of the native language of the Pataxó and Pataxó Ha-hã-hãe peoples, a craft display, and sports games with children from the village.

Teaching about indigenous cultures is crucial to promoting understanding, respect, and the preservation of our country’s cultural diversity. It helps combat stereotypes, value traditions, and strengthen the identity of indigenous communities.
