For more than six decades, Itaminas has turned Sarzedo's ore into raw material for the world.
Operations began in 1959 in the municipality of Sarzedo, Minas Gerais. Since then the company has grown alongside the changes in the market and today produces around 6.5 million tonnes of iron ore a year, in four product types that supply the steel industry in Brazil and abroad.
This growth has always gone hand in hand with investment in technology. Itaminas was the first mining company in Brazil to reclaim tailings dams to produce iron ore concentrate, and the first mid-sized company to use high-intensity magnetic separators, a technology until then limited to the large miners.
The next step is already under way. The installation of filters replaces wet tailings disposal with dry stacking, and the expansion project takes the plant to 10 million tonnes a year. These changes increase production, create jobs and establish Itaminas among the largest iron ore producers in Minas Gerais.
