On July 16 and 17, as part of the Environmental Education Program, we held a rug-making workshop with residents of Engenho Seco, where participants had the opportunity to learn how we can reduce our impact on the planet through the 5 R’s of Sustainability: Rethink, Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. This socio-environmental short course not only provided a space for hands-on learning, but also encouraged deep reflection on the benefits of recycling and sustainable practices in our daily lives.
During the rug-making workshop, participants discovered how creativity can be a powerful ally in reusing waste materials. They learned various weaving techniques, exploring innovative and traditional methods to turn discarded materials into useful, aesthetically pleasing items for the home. This program not only encouraged waste reduction, but also promoted artistic expression and creativity among residents.
The workshop was an excellent opportunity for participants to interact and share their own experiences and ideas about sustainability. Each person was able to contribute suggestions on how to apply the 5 R’s in their daily routines, making the learning experience even richer. In addition, the rugs made during the event will serve not only as a memento of the course, but also as a practical example of how small changes can have a big impact on environmental preservation.
